Oral History Project

The Oral History Project team would love to hear from residents interested in telling about their lives and their knowledge and experiences of Northfield during individually recorded interviews. Your unique memories and perspectives have the power to enlighten, touch, and inspire not only others but perhaps even yourself as you reminisce! Once completed, each recording will be shared with the person interviewed through a digital audio file. Recordings will also be archived and made available to others interested in exploring these invaluable first-hand recollections. In addition, stories and themes that emerge will help us plan additional 350th Anniversary events for 2023.

From mid-August through the end of October 2022, interviews will be conducted by project members trained by folklorists and audio producers Michael and Carrie Kline. To express interest in being interviewed, please fill out and submit this online form: Northfield 350 Oral History Interview Interest Form. Alternatively, paper copies of the form will be available at Dickinson Memorial Library and the Northfield Senior Center, where you can also drop off your completed form or mail it to Joan Stoia, 94 Main St., Northfield, MA 01360. You'll then be contacted by an interviewer who will provide further information and, if you decide to participate, schedule an appointment for your interview.

Thank you for your interest in being interviewed; we'd be honored to preserve your thoughts and memories in this way!

Tree50th

Saturday November 4 the "Tree50th" Project continued work to add fifty shade and ornamental trees along Main Street as a "gift to the future" in honor of our 350th anniversary. Seven trees were planted in June; another 20 will go in in November, and the remaining trees will be placed in the spring of 2024. Led by a team of five members of the Northfield Garden Club, the project has obtained recommendations from a forester from the Community Forestry Program of the Dept of Conservation and Recreation, applied for a planting permit from MADOT, worked with local nursery Sugarloaf, knocked on doors of homeowners along Main Street and organized a group of volunteers to handle planting, watering and caring for the trees.

If you would like to support this effort, please send your donation to: Tree50th Project, Northfield Town Hall, 69 Main Street, Northfield, MA 01360, or access the donor link here.

Invitations to volunteer will be posted on this website, Next Door, and town information sites. We are hoping this gift to the town will have lasting benefits far into the future.
